TOKAJ AUCTION 2018: THE FIRST WITH A VENUE IN LONDON

0

While bidding over the phone was possible at all of the previous five Tokaj Wine Auctions, the 2018 edition of the event was the first to use a live video link to connect an external venue, namely that of London wine club 67 Pall Mall, to the auction hall in Tokaj town. And nearly one-third of the final hammer price of 60,608 € actually came from bidders in London. It was obvious that it would have been difficult to repeat last year's record of 116,000 €. New records were set this year for the number of lots entered and highest price per bottle achieved (€450), the latter being for a 1963 Aszú from the National Treasury's collection in Tolcsva, entered by government-owned Grand Tokaj. Otherwise, the auction was, sadly, quite a setback, with only 55 per cent of the 33 lots sold and the total hammer price being the lowest ever in the short history of the Confrérie de Tokaj's regional wine auction.

Below are all the lots sold, listed in alphabetical order:

*Sárospataki Borterasz [Sárospatak Wine Terrace] is not a winery, but a joint initiative of Sárospatak-based winemakers, launched in 2014 to promote wines produced in the lesser-known north-east of the Tokaj region.

40 per cent of the hammer price goes to the Confrérie de Tokaj and will be used partly to fund the next auction and partly to support projects that serve to preserve and develop the Tokaj Wine Region, a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2002.

The Confrérie de Tokaj membership includes producers, wine professionals and wine lovers committed to promoting the Tokaj Wine Region. They launched the Great Tokaj Wine Auction as their main annual event in 2013. The venue was the Castle of Sárospatak until 2016 when they moved it to the Tokaj Cultural and Conference Centre in Tokaj town.
