Tokaj has taken home the Gál Tibor Memorial Award for the second time in a row, with Kata Zsirai (27) being the winner this time. Kata has, since 2011, overseen an annual production of 10000 to 15000 bottles from an estate of around 13 hectares that her father started building in 2005. The Mád-based winery is the largest of the three that the Zsirai family owns, the other two being in the Somló and Villány regions in the west of Hungary.
The Gál Tibor Memorial Award was founded in 2006 in memory of internationally renowned Eger-based winemaker Tibor Gál (formerly chief winemaker at Tenuta dell’Ornellaia, Italy and part owner of Capaia, South Africa, among many other positions and ventures) who was killed at the age of only 47 in a road accident in South Africa. The Award is given to recognise up-and-coming winemaking talents in Hungary.
