21 out of the 135 riders entered for this year's Drótszamár MTB Race decided to go for the newly-introduced marathon course of nearly 70-kilometres [44 miles]. While last year’s long-distance course was not much shorter, the new route ran close to the Tokaj region’s other two villages, Tállya and Mád, before returning to the start/finish point at Béres Winery just outside Erdőbénye. The rest of the athletes competed on either the medium course (approx. 50 km [31 miles] or the short course (31.2 km [19 miles]).
The event was sadly marred by a very seriuos accident. One of the long-distance riders had to be airlifted to hospital after losing control of his bike, because of a puncture, and falling into a ravine.
The word drótszamár [droːtsɒmaːr] literally translates as 'wire donkey', and is one of the many informal synonyms for bicycle in Hungarian.
